How To Boil Potatoes In A Microwave

If you have ever wondered if you can boil potatoes in the microwave then today's article is for you. Boiling potatoes in the microwave are quick and easy to make, it is perfect when you are cooking for 1 or 2 people. The spuds get cooked just the way you want it, fork-tender and fluffy and yes, it is safe as well.

Boiling potatoes in a microwave

Whether you want par-cook potatoes to be finished in the oven or fully steamed potatoes that can be eaten straight away, the microwave has you covered. This cooking method works for all types of spuds, baby potatoes, large potatoes, and even sweet potatoes.

Today, I'll show you how to cook diced potatoes in the microwave, but you may use this approach to cook large potatoes as well. You will only have to adjust the cooking time to suit the size of the spud.

Microwave boiled potatoes are great if you are living alone or you are only cooking for a few people. You will avoid food waste, the food cooks faster and the nutrient preserved too. You can make baked potatoes, chips, or mashed potatoes for half the fraction of the time you would if using other cooking methods. Let's get to it

Tools needed

Microwave safe bowl and BPA free. This is very important, do not to use a metal container or ordinary plastic inside the microwave oven, it can be very dangerous.

Chopping board

Sharp knife

What you'll need to make it

Potato: you can use any type of potatoes you want, red potatoes, russets, Idaho, King Edwards, Desiree, and the likes

Salt to taste

How to boil potatoes in a microwave

Wash and scrub the potatoes clean to get rid of dirt. Pat them dry with a kitchen towel (this step is important especially if you would be peeling and dicing the potatoes)

Peel the potatoes with a vegetable peeler or a small pairing knife if desired. Place the spud one at a time on a chopping board and dice it into small cubes (this will also help it cook faster)

Transfer the diced potatoes into a bowl and rinse under cold water once to get rid of excess starch (do this process if you are cooking whole peeled spud).

Add the rinsed potatoes to a microwavable bowl, add salt and water, just enough to cover the bottom of the bowl. Place a lid on the bowl or cover with a plastic wrap.

Microwave the potatoes on high for 3 minutes, check for doneness with a fork or a knife. If it needs a little more time, stir it and continue to cook at 1-minute intervals until the potatoes are fork-tender.

Tips

If you're microwaving a whole potato, large or fingerlings, pierce with a knife or poke with a fork several times to avoid it exploding during cooking.

If you don't want to cut the potatoes, make sure they're all the same size for uniform cooking time, or use potatoes of similar sizes.

To avoid mishaps, use microwave-safe bowls and lids.

If necessary, cook the spuds in batches to ensure uniform cooking

Microwave time will vary by model, so check the potatoes after 3 minutes for doneness and give it an extra 2 minutes if they are still hard or soft after that.

Freezer: store in an airtight container or freezer-safe bags, large potatoes should be wrapped individually for convenience. Freeze for up to 2 months or longer at your discretion.
